Evaporation ponds are used to prevent [[pesticide]]s, [[fertilizer]]s and [[salt]]s from agricultural wastewater from contaminating the water bodies they would flow into. In California, [[selenium]] in agricultural wastewater has been especially problematic, causing birth defects in waterfowl.
